About the Faculty of Economics and Business

DIEM's host faculty at the University of Dubrovnik.

The history of higher education and scientific-research work in Dubrovnik has its roots far in the past. Dubrovnik's centuries-old scientific tradition, as well as Croatian economic thought, date as far back as the 15th century in the works of Benedict Kotruljević. University four-year study programmes in tourism and foreign trade, and a two-year vocational study programme in tourism, were taught for 34 years at the Faculty of Tourism and Foreign Trade — now, as the Faculty of Economics and Business, an integral part of the University of Dubrovnik. The Faculty is the legal successor to the Faculty of Tourism and Foreign Trade (FTVT), established in Zagreb in 1970. In 1975, the Dubrovnik College of Tourism joined the Faculty, which in 1976 became part of the University of Split. The former Tourism Archives, established in 1938 by the Adriatic Tourist Forums, joined the Faculty in 1980.

Pursuant to a decision of the Croatian Sabor (Parliament), the University of Dubrovnik was established on 1 October 2003, marking the beginning of the Department of Economics and Business as one of the University's six departments. The curriculum included undergraduate programmes in Economics and Business Economics, with courses of study in Tourism, Marketing, International Trade, Management and Financial Management, as well as a vocational programme in Tourism. In 2004/2005, the Department enrolled its first generation of students in conformity with the Bologna Declaration — making the University of Dubrovnik the first institution of higher education in Croatia to introduce the new European model of higher education.

The curriculum has since expanded to include graduate programmes in Business Economics in Tourism and European Integration (within the TEMPUS Programme), and, since 2006, a graduate specialist course in Marketing Management in Tourism. In 2024, the Department of Economics and Business was elevated to a full Faculty.
